 Sold / Reference

Here is a magnificent large 1950/60's Venetian freeform 'Selenium' glass sculpture, made on the island of Murano, near Venice, Italy. In a stunning combination of ruby red glass encased in amber glass, using the renowned Venetian Sommerso technique.

Similar to Vaseline/Uranium glass, but far less common, Selenium glass reacts when lit with UV light by glowing a bright orange/pink colour. This does not show up that well on camera, but is a lot brighter to the naked eye. A metalloid element, Selenium (Se) resembles sulphur, and is used in the production of glass to remove the green tinge and to make ruby-colored glass.

A fabulous item, in a wonderful, organic form, it catches the light beautifully. Would make an excellent display piece.

Measures approx 10 inches tall by 7 inches in diameter at widest point.

Excellent condition, no chips or cracks, however there is an area to the base rim which looks like it may once have had a chip ground out. Shown in final picture.
