Description

This is a magnificent sculptural grey glass swan, made in China. Unmarked, but this design can be found with labels that read "Cello, made in China". It is not clear if Cello refers to a factory, retailer or brand name. The base finish is not highly polished, which is another good indicator of Chinese origin. Animals in this style were also made by both FM Konstglas of Sweden, V. Nason & C. of Murano, Italy, but both of these factories use a highly polished, glossy base finish, and are often signed. The feathered bubble effect is usually referred to as "sfumato", which in glass terms means a gradual change of shade, however it has recently been discovered that the correct term would be "fumato", which means "smoked", a technique which involves exposing the glass to smoke from a fire, to give the glass a smoky colour by picking up particles of unburnt ember and ash from the smoke. This has been confirmed on a Swedish glass forum [here], where a glassblower who worked for FM Konstglas/Marcolin, described the technique they used, involving smoke, to create this effect.

Size

Measures approx 6.75 inches tall by 4 inches in diameter at widest point.

Condition

No chips or cracks, just a few surface scratches and tooling marks around the edge of the base, shown in final pictures.
