Murano Red & Neodymium Lilac / Blue Vintage Glass Swan

Description

Here is a wonderful large and heavy (1.5kg unpacked) 1950/60's Venetian glass swan sculpture, made on the island of Murano, near Venice, Italy. In a stunning combination of red glass encased in lilac or smoky blue glass. The lilac layer is made from neodymium glass (also known as alexandrite glass), which changes colour according to different lighting conditions. It appears lilac in natural sunlight or yellow artificial light, and smoky blue in fluorescent/white light (see pictures). This is due to the presence of neodymium oxide (Nd²O³) in the glass.

Measures approx 12.75 inches tall by 6.5 inches in diameter at widest point.
