Vetri Murano (VM) Glass Labels Guide

Back to Glass Encyclopedia Home

Below is a list of numerical codes found on the Vetri Murano labels, along with the corresponding Murano factories that they relate to. They came with either a clear transparent or opaque white background, with the words "Vetri Murano" and logo "VM" in black writing. These labels were created by a consortium of glass entrepreneurs called Consorzio Venezia Vetro, which was established in 1975. The labels came into use in 1981, and were used possibly up until 2001. The Vetri Murano labels were created to be a method of guaranteeing and promoting authentic Murano glass factories, that pre-dates the Vetro Artistico Murano (VAM) trademarked labels which came into use since 2002. The information below comes from labelled examples found online or shared by members of several Murano glass study groups based on Facebook.

Update - I recently came across an article published on another site about these labels, with a list almost identical to ours, but with a few extra's added. The site is known to be accurate with other Murano information, so I will add these extra entries to our list, and highlight them in pale grey until I am able to verify them with labelled examples.

Notes: The first example below shows the 022 code with an "Effetre Murano" factory label. Other examples below mention Venini in the comments as using the 022 code, but I've not seen the evidence for this and it may be a mistake. Apparently one example was seen with a Venini label in the very early stages of the research into these labels, and no record was kept. It's possibly that this early sighting may have instead been a very worn 002 coded label.

Notes: For some reason, despite the examples below, the Muranonet site has this number down as Seguso Vetri d'Arte. Possible label mix-up?
