Description

Hardback book full of information and photos to aid with the identification of Murano glass made by the Salviati factory. An immensely useful book that I thoroughly recommend to any collector or dealer of Murano glass.

Synopsis

The Salviati Collection of Venetian glass was presented to Leland Stanford Junior Museum the end of the 19th Century. This collection encompasses virtually all the colours, styles and techniques marketed under the celebrated name and has been under wraps since the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. An introductory essay explores the art of Venetian glass blowing, a tradition that goes back more than 1000 years. This art, flourished during 15th, 16th & 17th Century but collapsed with the fall of the Venetian Republic in 1797. The revival of glassmaking was largely due to Antonio Salviati, a lawyer. An energetic promoter, he was soon exhibiting both mosaic and glass vessels abroad. Two hundred and forty five pieces are illustrated and described in this comprehensive publication.
