A stunning opaline/opalescent
glass owl paperweight, made by Seguso Vetri d'Arte
, on the island of Murano
, near Venice, Italy. A big thanks to Anita from the excellent Murano Zoo
website who contacted me with this ID. For reference please [click here
]. Still bears the original retailer label, which reads "3 Vignanuova, K, Firenze"
This design is shown in the excellent book Seguso Vetri d'Arte - Glass Objects from Murano (1932-1973)
by Marc Heiremans, page 136. The catalogue images in the book give the pattern number 9754
, designed in 1953-54. This would make Flavio Poli
the most likely designer.
Measures approx 2.75 inches tall by 2.5 inches in diameter at widest point.
Excellent condition, no chips or cracks other than a minute fleabite to the very tip of the beak, which I have tried to show in final picture. Not visible at all when on display.
