Murano Green & Neodymium Lilac / Blue Sommerso Glass Swan

Description

Here is a wonderful 1950/60's Venetian glass swan sculpture, made on the island of Murano, near Venice, Italy.  In a stunning combination of turquoise green glass encased in lilac or smoky blue glass, using the renowned Venetian sommerso technique. The lilac layer is made from neodymium glass (also known as alexandrite glass), which changes colour according to different lighting conditions.  It appears lilac in natural sunlight or yellow artificial light, and smoky blue in fluorescent/white light (see pictures). This is due to the presence of neodymium oxide (Nd²O³) in the glass.

Measures approx 8 inches tall by 4 inches in diameter at widest point.

Excellent condition, no chips or cracks.
