Romanian Glass Identification Guide + Gallery
Back to Glass Encyclopedia Home
This section of the encyclopaedia is for Romanian glass. There is a surprising amount of vintage glassware, found in the UK and elsewhere, that is often mistaken for Italian/Murano glass, but was in fact made in Romania. Labelled examples can be found with three different spellings, which is helpful for dating. Labels that read "Made in Roumania" or "Made in Rumania", date to before 1975. After 1975 the English spelling for the country was changed, and very similar labels can be found that read "Made in Romania". Therefore, items that bare these labels can be dated to approximately 1970's. Information on Romanian glass factories is hard to come by, but two factories that are known to have produced the popular glass fish and other items, are: Pădurea Neagră (Black Forest), in operation 1841 - 1996, and Tomeşti, approx 1820 - 1990. Another Romanian glass factory that I have come across while researching is Prodcomplex, which used labels that read "Prodcomplex, Tirgu-Mures". Tirgu-Mures (also spelled Târgu Mureș) is the town in Romania where the factory was located.
